Fairport CSD: New Transportation Center
Fueling Progress: Fairport’s New Transportation Center Designed for the Future
In the heart of the Fairport community, where over 100 school buses clock a million miles each year transporting students safely, a transformation was long overdue. For more than half a century, the District’s aging bus garage had served as the backbone of its transportation operations. But time had taken its toll, leaving the facility undersized and ill-equipped to meet the demands of a growing fleet and modern safety standards.
The journey toward a new Transportation Center began in 2015, sparked by insights from the Building Condition Survey (BCS). LaBella partnered closely with the Fairport Central School District and their construction manager, setting out to reimagine a space that could rise to the District’s evolving needs. By 2016, after months of collaboration, planning, and community engagement, the vision for a state-of-the-art bus garage and driver training facility took a major leap forward with a successful referendum.
From the start, the project presented unique challenges. Nestled on a small site, the new facility had to be built in phases to allow the existing garage to continue operations during construction. The design team worked hand-in-hand with the construction manager, local authorities, and manufacturers, weaving together expertise to deliver a seamless and efficient build.
The result is more than just a building—it’s a hub of innovation and safety. The 21,000-sq. ft., two-story Transportation Center is equipped to handle the future of the District’s fleet. Inside, a modern driver’s room provides a space for training and breaks, complete with a kitchenette to keep teams fueled for the road ahead. The maintenance bay can now accommodate seven buses, with dedicated spaces for fabrication, parts storage, and even a drive-through automatic vehicle wash. Outside, a new covered fuel island and clearly defined parking areas ensure safety and efficiency for staff, the public, and the buses.
This new facility isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a statement of commitment to the Fairport community. By embracing innovation and collaboration, the District now has a transportation hub that meets enhanced industry standards, accommodates larger vehicles, and sets the stage for continued excellence in student safety and service.
