Hornell CSD 2022 Capital Improvement Project

Hornell’s New Sports Facilities Increase Community Engagement

As part of its 2022 Capital Improvement Plan, the Hornell City School District sought to address its severely damaged and condemned tennis court facility. LaBella worked with the District to design and construct new, state-of-the-art tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts. The project aimed to enhance the District’s athletic facilities and provide the community with high-quality, accessible sports amenities.

During construction, demolition fills were discovered beneath the existing tennis courts —likely contributing to deteriorating conditions, including surface cracking and heaving. This unsuitable soil was removed, and the new courts were built on a geogrid system with underdrainage to help mitigate future cracking caused by movement in the underlying soil.

Successfully opened to the public on August 7, 2024, the tennis and basketball courts feature a bright red and blue surfacing combination that matches the District’s school colors. Fully lit for nighttime use and open to the public after school hours, the courts encourage greater community engagement in health and wellness activities.
