Across the country, municipalities are facing a shortage of affordable, suitable, and high-quality housing. State governments are launching ambitious housing initiatives, while local communities continue to grapple with aging housing stock, rising costs, and shifting demand.

In the September/October 2025 issue of Talk of the Towns magazine, published by the New York Association of Towns, Derik Kane, AICP, CNU-A, discusses how local governments can address these challenges proactively. His number one recommendation? Invest in comprehensive housing assessments. From site conditions to demand to equity, assessments can help diagnose pressing issues, understand future demand, and identify projects for potential funding.

Thank you to the New York Association of Towns (NYAOT) for featuring an article that equips communities with a strategy to address housing needs.
