North Carolina’s Triennial Review Could Bring Significant Groundwater Standard Changes

North Carolina’s Triennial Review of groundwater standards could bring several notable changes for the solid waste industry, including both more stringent and less restrictive standards for common landfill-related constituents.

As summarized in the chart below, several proposed standards could significantly affect compliance obligations, assessment strategies, and long-term corrective action considerations for landfill owners and operators.

According to the current Readoption Schedule, the proposed changes are not expected to be submitted to the Environmental Management Commission (EMC) until Fall 2026, followed by a public hearing and comment period in early 2027, with final adoption anticipated in Fall 2027.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
