Aspen Court

Aspen Court Apartment Homes is a 413-unit multifamily community in Piscataway, NJ, where residents enjoy modern living with enhanced outdoor amenities. Tasked with transforming an underutilized space beyond the pool, our team designed a multi-functional outdoor retreat that balances aesthetics, comfort, and sustainability while addressing key environmental challenges.

One of the primary considerations was the site’s full sun exposure, which necessitated the integration of a modern steel pergola to provide shade while maintaining an open, airy feel. To further mitigate heat, we incorporated strategically placed shade trees and heat-resistant paving materials that reduce surface temperatures.

Given the high visibility from balconies on all sides, our design focused on layered plantings that provide a lush, structured aesthetic year-round while offering a sense of privacy and enclosure. A curated mix of native and adaptive plant species enhances biodiversity, requires minimal maintenance, and creates a visually appealing experience from every vantage point.

Another key challenge was drainage management in an area with existing impermeable surfaces. To address this, we incorporated permeable pavers and decorative stone aggregate, which facilitate natural water infiltration, reduce runoff, and prevent pooling during heavy rains. These elements not only enhance stormwater management but also add texture and contrast to the overall design.

Seating throughout the space is versatile and adaptable, ranging from built-in benches and lounge areas to dining tables that accommodate both social gatherings and flexible workspaces. Integrated electrical access supports remote work, while carefully placed site lighting—overhead string lights and low-profile path lighting—extends usability into the evening. The centrally located gas fire pit acts as a focal point, providing warmth and ambiance year-round.

By seamlessly blending functionality, resilience, and design, this revitalized outdoor space has become a true extension of the Aspen Court community, offering a welcoming, multi-seasonal destination that enhances the resident experience.
