Kendall Central School District 2023 Capital Improvement Project

A Playground for the Future

To replace a nearly 30-year-old playground structure, the Kendall Central School District allocated funds from its $12.68 million 2023 Capital Improvement Plan for a new, state-of-the-art playground. This transformative upgrade to the elementary school playground will provide a modern, inclusive, and engaging play space—reflecting the school’s deep commitment to student well-being, community values, and the importance of play in childhood development.

The idea for the new playground design was championed by the superintendent and elementary school principal, who worked closely with the community to ensure the project met the diverse needs of Kendall families. Students, parents, educators, and local stakeholders played an active role in shaping the vision through site visits, focus groups, and collaborative planning sessions. Their input was central to creating a thoughtfully designed space that prioritizes learning, safety, and community pride.

Key features of the playground include age-appropriate play structures, enhanced accessibility, integrated educational elements, and visual details that reflect the District’s identity. A blue light notification system will also be installed as part of broader, district-wide safety improvements—underscoring a holistic approach to creating a secure and welcoming environment for all.

Expected to open in late August 2025, the playground will serve as a lasting symbol of Kendall’s dedication to its students and families—a vibrant, community-driven space where the joy and power of play will inspire generations to come.

Playground Features

Featuring a more open and varied layout, the new playground offers play elements—such as slides, seesaws, and swings—that will appeal to students across all elementary grade levels.

Volo Aire

The Volo Aire—a covered, multi-story climbing tower with slides—is the first of its kind on the East Coast.

We-Go-Round

The We-Go-Round, a modern-day merry-go-round, has a floor-level entry, making it accessible for students with mobility challenges and those who use wheelchairs. Custom panels displaying seasonal photos of Kendall, taken by art teacher Andy King, will adorn its sides.

Additional Play Elements

In addition to the Volo Aire and We-Go-Round, the playground will also have We-Saws, a zipline, chill spinners, swings, climbing mounds, and several shaded areas.

Play Surface

Turf will replace woodchips as the play surface, providing a cleaner, safer, and more accessible experience.

Safety

The previous location of the playground required students to cross an access road to reach the play area. To create space for the new playground, nearby tennis and basketball courts were removed. The new site, located further away from the road, significantly reduces safety concerns.

Construction has begun!

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in spring 2025 to mark the beginning of construction. The playground is expected to open in August 2025. Click the button below to read more about the ceremony and hear from school leaders about the project.
