Smith Farm Gardens Landscape Planning & Design

Landscape Views Fit for a Wedding Venue

Smith Farm Gardens is a hospitality and wedding venue based in an 18th century farmhouse in central Connecticut. Originally purchased in 1718, with the home constructed in 1778, the property was used as a small family farm until the early 1900s, then an organic fruit and vegetable farm.

In 2017, the property transitioned into a hospitality and wedding venue, while still maintaining a small farm. In 2022, the venue owners—seeking to highlight the farm and gardens—enlisted LaBella to develop a master plan for the farm and garden areas of the property.

LaBella’s landscape architects collaborated with the owners to develop a program which included a new cottage, additional venue options, and a revamped garden designed to supply fresh food and cut flowers.

Designed From Every Angle

While designed to function as a flexible and modern wedding venue, the garden also pays homage to the property’s past. Drawing inspiration from the farmhouse and using historical period context cues, the design team developed a structured garden reminiscent of those found on farms and estates in colonial America.

The garden was designed with formal structure around the central cottage. It stretches from an apple orchard at one end to a cherry grove, lawn, and arbor at the other. Each of these spaces creates distinct venues within the larger garden. A circular opening within the apple orchard carves out a space for ceremonies. Farm beds give guests space to mill about. An allée of cherry blossom trees establishes a wedding aisle leading to the arbor. A wall of white hydrangea lines the gardens, blooming in mid-summer. A stone wall separates the gardens from the driveway.

The space is designed to provide an intentional viewpoint from every entry to the garden.
