Village of Celoron Lucille Ball Memorial Park Amenities Building
New Park Amenity Building at Lucille Ball Memorial Park
With a grant from the USDA and overseen by the Chautauqua Lake & Watershed Management Alliance, LaBella was selected to design a new park amenity building in the Lucille Ball Memorial Park in the Village of Celoron, New York. The new building provides restrooms for park users and storage for park equipment.
In such a small park, building placement was key. Specifically, the facility needed to be close to baseball fields, door entrances needed to be visible from the parking lot, and the floodplain needed to be avoided. Additionally, proximity to existing utilities was a factor in the building’s placement.
LaBella designed three options, presenting each in a public presentation. The selected option was sensitive to and played off of the materials and scale of a new hotel that was recently built nearby.
On the exterior of the building, the materials selected for the colored, split-face concrete block allow for high durability and low maintenance, while the synthetic stone veneer accents and softens the concrete block. The vinyl siding, asphalt roof, and translucent windows give the building the feeling of a residence rather than a utilitarian restroom facility.
Highly durable materials were also selected for the interior of the building. In addition, stainless steel toilet accessories, epoxy floors, epoxy painted block walls, and plastic toilet partitions were selected in neutral soothing colors to soften the practical function of the building.
