Lackawanna Celebrates New Athletic Fields With Historic First Home Night Game

Lackawanna City School District (LCSD) celebrated the opening of its new high school athletic fields on October 9, 2026, with a ribbon cutting ceremony before the Homecoming football game. For the first time, the Steelers played a home night game under the lights on school grounds, surrounded by students, families, staff, alumni, and neighbors.

The athletic complex marks the first completed project in the District’s $81.2 million capital improvement program, for which LaBella Associates serves as the full-service design team.

The new complex includes approximately 210,000 square feet of synthetic turf, with areas and markings for football, soccer, baseball, softball, and flag football. It also features bullpens, batting cages, and a mini soccer field for community use. Three scoreboards, a video board, new grandstand bleachers, a press box, field lighting, and a speaker system support games and other school events. A new field storage building includes concessions and restrooms, complemented by renovated restrooms inside the school.

Opening the fields on Homecoming night gave the Lackawanna community a chance to experience the complex together. The new spaces will support student athletics, school events, and community recreation for years to come.

As the first completed project in the District’s capital improvement program, the athletic complex represents the beginning of a series of upgrades planned for every school. One major component still to come is the reopening of McKinley Elementary School in September 2028.

LaBella is proud to have worked alongside the District, Buffalo Construction Consultants, and the many partners who helped bring this milestone to life. Congratulations to LCSD on a historic night and an exciting new chapter for its students and community.
