Lake Ontario Shoreline Stabilization
REDI Funding Provides Town of Greece Residents with "Shorely" Needed Improvements
Many communities along the southern Lake Ontario shoreline have faced challenges due to elevated water levels and an extended pattern of flooding. The Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI) was created to increase the resilience of shoreline communities.
This project was a repair to shoreline erosion damage along a 500 ft. long portion of roadway and residential properties sustained during the 2017 and 2019 high waters of Lake Ontario located along the north side of Ontario Boulevard in the Town of Greece, New York.
The shoreline contained some shoreline riprap and concrete slabs for public access, both of which had sustained some erosion damage. Select areas of the shoreline were salvageable while other areas required repair and addition of new stone to protect the nearby public road and residences.
LaBella coordinated with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to obtain an Article 15 permit for work below mean high water level (MHWL) of Lake Ontario. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New York State Department of State (NYSDOS), and the local municipality were also involved in the permitting process.
Work included on-site evaluation, preparation of a design report, design drawings and details, and opinion of probable cost.
Highlights of the project:
- Mapped nearby NYSDEC wetlands.
- Heavy rock toe of slope protection for portions of shoreline affected by the high-water erosion.
- Revetment improvements to well above the lake high-water line.
- Topsoil and seeding of lawn and yard areas to re-establish a vegetative buffer.
