Tapestry on the Hudson Residential Sky Garden

A Green Garden in the Sky

The former Mooradians Building, located along the Hudson River in Troy, New York, was originally built as an industrial-era factory and most recently housed the Mooradians Furniture Company, which operated it as a showroom and storage facility until 2006.

As part of a professional design/build team, LaBella’s civil engineers and landscape architects supported the redevelopment of the Mooradians Building into 67 mixed-income family residential units.

After helping secure funding through the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation’s Green Innovation Grant Program, LaBella’s landscape architects and civil engineers collaborated to design a “sky garden”—a green pedestrian space built above a concrete parking deck along the waterfront.

Together with several other nearby redevelopment projects in Troy, this project continues to revitalize the city’s waterfront and strengthen its urban character.

Green Infrastructure Highlights

The sky garden features green infrastructure, including:

  • A rainwater harvesting cistern
  • Permeable pavers
  • A permeable playground area

Lawn space and tree/landscaped planters help create a natural space within the urban environment. Raised community garden planters were also incorporated in partnership with Capital Roots, a nonprofit that organizes community gardens to improve access to healthy food in the community.
