Town and Village of Stillwater Open Space and Trails Master Plan

Preserving Open Space, Recreation, and History in Saratoga County

Working closely with Town of Stillwater and Village of Stillwater leadership, LaBella Associates completed a community-wide open space and trails master plan. The Town of Stillwater—a scenic Saratoga County community located on the west side of the Hudson River—has long recognized the value of open space preservation and trail connectivity. The area is also home to many historic landmarks, notably Revolutionary War sites and the Saratoga National Historical Park, which is operated by the National Park Service. The existing landscape viewsheds, cultural sites, equestrian farms, agricultural community, and quaint village settings combine to make this Saratoga County community a natural fit for preservation.

To identify and assess opportunities for new open space preservation and trail resources, LaBella coordinated a review of the community’s existing spaces and trails. The result was a master plan that outlines existing and targeted open space areas, current and planned trails, and opportunities for both active and passive recreation—all designed to better connect residents to local amenities. In conjunction with the Town of Stillwater’s planner, LaBella also developed strategies to implement the plan’s recommendations within the structure of the community’s other planning and visioning documents.

The master plan provides a roadmap for leveraging the area’s social, cultural, natural, historical, and recreational resources—ultimately supporting the preservation of unique landscapes and enhancing quality of life. Town and Village leadership will use the plan to guide future open space and trail development across this diverse and distinctive region.

Supported by a Comprehensive GIS Database

An important aspect of the project was the creation of a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) database of the study area. This database and mapping will serve as a strategic planning tool for local, regional, and state planning boards as they review and assess potential challenges and opportunities related to land development, land preservation, and potential connectivity to the Village and Town’s passive recreational resources.
