UNC Charlotte Student Activity Center & Addition
Valuable Resources for Students, Faculty, and Visitors
UNC Charlotte Student Activity Center
The UNC Charlotte’s Student Activity Center is the focus of campus life for the entire University. The mission of the facility was threefold: (1) to provide space for student interaction, recreation, and intramural play; (2) to provide for major campus events such as commencement, varsity sports, and concerts; and (3) to provide additional space for campus food service.
Major spaces within the design include an arena with fixed and retractable telescopic seating for 9,500 spectators, which can be converted into intramural practice courts for recreational use, a food court that can transform into a concourse for major events, and a hospitality room that can be subdivided into classrooms for seminars and other functions. The building also features a game room for student relaxation, along with lockers, administrative offices for athletics, and exercise and weighted areas. By accommodating a variety of uses, the Student Activity Center serves as a hub that connects the University with the broader community.
Miltimore-Wallis Athletics Training and Academic Center
A new 32,000-square-foot addition to the multi-sport Student Activity Center includes a practice gym for basketball, volleyball, and track and field training. The facility also houses a 4,300-square-foot weight and training area for varsity athletes, complete with two strength training offices and a storage room.
The men’s basketball suite features a head coach’s office, four assistant coaches’ offices, storage space, and a reception area. On the second level, a multimedia video room with platform seating accommodates up to 50 occupants. The women’s basketball suite includes a head coach’s office and four assistant coaches’ offices, while the volleyball program has separate head and assistant coach offices. Additionally, the women’s coaches’ have a separate, dedicated reception area and a shared storage and file room.
An academic center for athletes provides study carrels, conference rooms, meeting rooms, academic counselors, and support areas, ensuring student-athletes have the resources they need for academic success.
