MUSC – Colbert Education Center & Library

Connecting Campus, Community, and Clinical Care

The comprehensive renewal of the 1967 Colbert Education Center and Library redefines one of the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) most prominent academic buildings, transforming it into a vibrant hub for medical education, simulation, and student life. Blending renovation and expansion, the project integrates a state-of-the-art Simulation Center while revitalizing library, study, collaboration, and support spaces throughout the facility including the addition of a welcoming café that energizes the daily student experience.

Completed in coordinated phases, the renovation strategically co-locates immersive simulation environments with enhanced library and study spaces, fostering a seamless connection between hands-on clinical training and academic research. A new four-story addition along the west façade introduces expanded program areas and light-filled lobbies that strengthen circulation and visibility within the building.

LaBella partnered with MUSC from the earliest stages, beginning with a feasibility study and detailed programming and planning to align the renovation and expansion with the University’s long-term goals. The team provided full architectural and interior design services, construction documents, and construction administration from concept through completion. Integrated AV/IT consultation and design ensured that the new Simulation Center and learning environments support evolving pedagogies and the technological demands of modern medical education. Thoughtfully specified finishes and furnishings further reinforce a cohesive identity throughout the revitalized facility.

The result is a renewed academic destination that honors the building’s legacy while positioning MUSC at the forefront of interdisciplinary healthcare education and training.
